5 Tips for Selecting Family Photoshoot Outfits

Here are a few tips I have for my families getting ready for a family photoshoot!

  1. Stick to Neutrals

My biggest tip for family photos is sticking to neutral tones. This allows the focus of the image to be on you instead of the colors and tones that might be present in your outfits. We want all the attention to go directly to the people and their expressions instead of the clothings themselves.

2. Embrace Textures

Incorporation textures in clothing allows for you to create depth in your family portraits while also adding variety that you feel is lacking with neutral selections. Think dress with layers or unique fabrics, ruffles for children, and accessories that create a layering effect.

3. Don’t Forget Extra Outfits

For the littles this is always a great idea! We never want to find ourselves limited by an accident, or mess that restricts the rest of the photoshoot. If anything happens during the shoot, a quick change is a great option to keeping everyone comfortable and satisfied with how the final gallery comes together.

4. Bring Layers

It’s common to take family photos during the spring and fall months of the year and with that comes unpredictable weather. I always suggest selecting some layering pieces to being to your shoot in case the kids need some extra clothing to keep warm. You can always remove layers but we can’t always incorporate their brightly colored winter coat into the photos.

5. Be True to You

Family photos are about capturing the truest form of your family so I would suggest to keep away from clothing that your children aren’t used to on a regular basis. Reflect on what makes your kids comfortable and free to be themselves during the shoot while still sticking to a neutral color palette.

When working with my clients, we put intentional time to chatting about outfit selection. I send all my family client’s a family style guide that goes into depth about these key points.
