5 Tips for Natural Family Portraits

I’m passionate about family photography and I love helping families get the most out of their family photoshoot. I’m compiled these tips to help families have both an enjoyable photoshoot and get great images.

  1. Focus on Connection

By focusing on connection and not the final results, you’ll create a more natural and authentic experience. this will create images that truly represent your family and show everyone’s unique personalities.

I love having the parents off camera, making the kids laugh and feel natural. It gets the focus off of the camera and more on each other.

2. Let go of Expectations

part of the full experience of family photos is living in the moment. Letting go of the vision or ideal image allows for you to embrace the current moment.

3. Don’t look at the Camera!

The majority of my family imagery consists of my families not looking at the camera. Pointing your attention to your children and spouse gives the perspective of someone getting a peak into your everyday life moments.

4. Pick a Natural Location

Make sure the goal of a natural family photography is embodied in all aspects of your session. My favorite locations for natural family photos is an outdoor space or in my client’s home.

5. Make Sure You’re Comfortable

This Matters both in a physical and emotional way. Make sure everyone is comfortable and confident in their clothing. avoid heels that hurt and restricting clothing for kids that could cause discomfort. Alongside that, make sure your photographer specializes in natural family photography and knows how to work with children.

Prior to photography I worked in a school setting from 2017-2020. I’ve worked in preschool and early childhood settings, middle schools, and alternative high school programs. children of all abilities and perspectives I capture and love connecting to children that allows for me to capture their unique beauty.
